The selective affinity of anionic detergents for elastica: a new stain for elastica.
نویسنده
چکیده
This report concerns the observation that certain anionic detergents have a specific affinity for elastica, and because these anionic detergents precipitate cationic basic dyes in aqueous solution, a rather specific stain for elastica can be obtained. There are many satisfactory methods for the histologic demonstration of elastica, the most popular being: a) acid orcein (Unna), b) Verhoef's, c) Weigert's and d) Gomori's aldehyde-fuchsin stains (1, 2, 3). Though most of these methods have been known for many years their specific histochemistry remains unexplained. Indeed the chemical nature of elastica is, in itself, poorly understood. Recent reports (4, 5, 6, 7, 8) suggest that elastica consists of proteinfibrils which are embedded in amorphous sulfated polysaccharide. Being a complex of protein and mucin, Hall (4) proposes the term elastomucin for elastica. In the light of our incomplete knowledge of the complicated nature of elastic tissue, a general term such as elastica will be retained in this report and will refer to biologic material which is stained by the conventional methods for elastica.

The value of an elastic tissue stain in detecting venous invasion in colorectal cancer.
BACKGROUND Venous invasion by tumour is an independent prognostic indicator of both prognosis and risk of development of distant metastases in colorectal carcinoma. The use of special stains to aid its detection in pathology specimens is not currently universally recommended. AIMS To determine whether an elastica stain significantly increases the incidence of detection of vascular invasion co...
متن کاملOn the Cauchy Problem for a Dynamical Euler’s Elastica
The dynamics for a thin, closed loop inextensible Euler’s elastica moving in three dimensions are considered. The equations of motion for the elastica include a wave equation involving fourth order spatial derivatives and a second order elliptic equation for its tension. A Hasimoto transformation is used to rewrite the equations in convenient coordinates for the space and time derivatives of th...

An elastic rod is clamped at one end and has a dead load attached to the other (free) end. The rod is then slowly rotated using the clamp. When the load is smaller than the buckling value, the rod describes a continuous set of quasi-static forms and its end traces a (smooth, convex and simple) closed curve, which would be a circle if the rod were rigid. The closed curve is analytically determin...
متن کاملSupervised learning via Euler's Elastica models
This paper investigates the Euler’s elastica (EE) model for high-dimensional supervised learning problems in a function approximation framework. In 1744 Euler introduced the elastica energy for a 2D curve on modeling torsion-free thin elastic rods. Together with its degenerate form of total variation (TV), Euler’s elastica has been successfully applied to low-dimensional data processing such as...

A60-year-old man was referred for coronary angiography because of exertional angina (Canadian Cardiovascular Society angina classification type II). Twelve years earlier, he had had a myocardial infarction with a venous bypass graft to the right coronary artery. Two months before we saw him, a stent (Figure 1A) was placed in the distal part of the venous graft because of stable angina. Angiogra...
